This is the highest graded 1842 Victorian shield reverse sovereign we have seen in 20 years. Graded by NGC as MS 65 this example ranks as the second finest example known across both NGC and PCGS. The last MS 65 example to sell realised $19,200 in a Heritage auction 28th October 2021.
Victoria (1837-1901), Sovereign, 1842, 'Closed 2', first small young head left, W.W. raised on truncation, rev. crowned normal shield in wreath, (Marsh 25; EGC 1061; S.3852). Good extremely fine, very trivial bag marks only.
Reverse :The Ensigns Armorial within a plain shield and surmounted by a crown. A branch of laurel is shown on each side of the shield. At the bottom the Thistle, Rose and Shamrock are placed with a small flower stop each side.
