The designer, John Bergdahl, has created a standing portrait of Britannia, incorporating the motifs of the lighthouse, the trident, the shield and the helmet that have long been associated with the numismatic image of Britannia.

The centenary of the first Olympic Games to be held in London falls in 2008 and the Royal Mint has struck a commemorative £2 coin in celebration of the sporting achievements of the athletes who competed at that 4th Olympiad. Produced in 22 carat gold to superior Proof quality, the £2 commemorative coin features a special reverse design by Royal Mint engraver, Thomas T Docherty, and shows a running track as the central image and the anniversary date of 1908.
