KENNETH OSWALD PEPPIATT

(1934-1949)

(The 20th Chief Cashier)

Kenneth Peppiatt was born in 1893. He was educated at Bancroft’s School and was  elected to the staff of the Bank on 9th November 1911. During the First World War he served with the 7th Batallion London Regiment, spending three years in Flanders. He rose to the rank of Major, was wounded twice and was awarded the MC and bar. Returning to the Bank after the war he rose to become Principal of the Discount Office in 1928 and Chief Cashier on 18th April 1934.

KOP as he was known, held the post for 15 years until 28th February 1949, the second longest period (after Gordon Nairne) in the century. He was knighted in 1941. From 1949 he was an Executive Director until his retirement in 1957 when he joined Coutts Bank as a Director. He died at the age of 90 on 12th May 1983.

The decision on whether to price Peppiatt for UNC/EF rather than EF/VF is finely balanced as availability of material varies widely between issues.
