John Brangwyn Page

JOHN BRANGWYN PAGE

(1970-1980)

(The 25th Chief Cashier)

John Page was born on 23rd August 1923 (he was named Brangwyn after the artist Sir Frank Brangwyn). He was educated at Highgate School and King’s College, Cambridge. Having served as a pilot in the RAF during the war he joined the Bank in 1948 and was seconded for two years to the IMF in 1953. He was appointed Assistant Chief Cashier in 1966 and First Deputy Chief Cashier in March 1968. He held the post of Chief Cashier from 1st March 1970 to 29th February 1980 (which he said he enjoyed more than anything else he had ever done). He even agreed to appear on the television programme “Jim’ll Fix It” in response to a request from young boy to “meet the man who signs the pound notes.” Page became an Executive Director of the Bank in 1980 until his retirement in 1982. He died on 2nd February 2005.

When note production was switched from Fforde to Page, there were not enough signature blocks available and so Fforde notes continued to be produced concurrently with Page for well over a year. £1 B305p, £5 B314p, £10 B316p. For the £1 alone 55 numerical overlaps have been logged. For more details (see page 236 of English Paper Money).
