CYRIL PATRICK MAHON
(1925-1929)
(The 18th Chief Cashier)
Cyril Mahon was born on 9th September 1882, the son of
the Rev G.A.Mahon vicar of Leigh-on-Mendip in Somerset. He was
educated at All Saints School, Clifton, and All Saints Bloxham, in
Oxfordshire. His first job was in the Lincoln Bank at Grimsby where he
spent a year before being elected to the Bank of England on 14th March
1901. According to his obituary in the Times Mahon was a man of
outstanding character and his technical ability and clarity of
judgement were of great service during the 1914-18 war. In 1916 he was
appointed assistant principal of the Discount Office. He became
assistant chief cashier in 1918, deputy chief cashier in 1923 and held
the post of Chief Cashier from 1st April 1925 to 26th March 1929. His
final job at the bank was as Comptroller from 1929-32 when ho was
forced to retire due to ill health. He returned to Somerset in
retirement where he lived at Bishops Hull, just outside Taunton. He
died on 14th July 1945.
