MERLYN VIVIENNE
LOWTHER (1999 - 2003)
(The 29th Chief Cashier)
Merlyn Lowther was born on 3rd March 1954. She
was educated at Manchester High School for Girls and at the University
of Manchester where she graduated with first class honours in
mathematics in 1975. She gained her MSc (Economics) from London
Business School in 1981. Ms Lowther has spent her entire workin life
at the Bank, joining direct from university as an analyst in the
Economics Division. Over the following 15 years she worked variously
in Money Market Operations, Foreign Exchange and the Gilt Edged
Division. In 1991 she was appointed Head of Banking and Deputy Chief
Cashier and in 1996 became Personnel Director. Merlyn Lowther was
appointed Chief Cashier (and a Deputy Director of the Bank) on 1st
January 1999, the first woman to hold the position In the Bank’s 300
year history. She retired on 31st December 2003.
