JASPER QUINTUS HOLLOM
(1962-1966)
(The 23rd Chief Cashier)
Jasper Hollom was born on 16th December 1917. He
took his first job as an insurance clerk at the age of 17. He entered
Bank service in 1936. During the war he served in the infantry in
the Middle East and the Western Desert but was captured in 1942 and
sent to a prisoner of war camp in Italy. He rejoined the bank after
the war and worked as assistant to the Chief Cashier, Leslie O’Brien.
In 1956 he was made Deputy Chief Cashier and was Chief Cashier from
1st March 1962 to 30th June 1966.
A press comment at the time said: “Hollom has a
certain dignified ring to it that seems wholly British and most
reassuring - there could never be the slightest doubt that Mr Hollom
would pay the bearer on the demand the sum of one pound.” he was
appointed to the Court of Directors in 1966 and succeeded Sir Maurice
Parsotet as Deputy Governor in March 1970, a position he held until
1980. He was knighted in 1975. Sir Jasper Hollom retired on 29th
February 1984 after serving a further four years as a non-executive
Director.
