JOHN STANDISH FFORDE
(1966-1970)
(The 24th Chief Cashier)
John Fforde was born on 16th November 1921. He
was educated at Rossall school and Christ Church College, Oxford. After
serving as a pilot in the RAF during the war. he returned to Oxford
where he became a Fellow of Nuffield College. He entered Bank service
in 1957 and spent four years as Deputy Head of the Cen to Banking
Information Department. In 1964 he became Advisor to the Governor and
was appointed Chief Cashier on 1st July 1966 a position he held to
28th Februniy 1970. He was an Executive Director from 1970 to 1982 and
was again Advisor to the Governor from 1982-84. He died on 19th April
2000.
When note production was switched from Fforde to
Page, there were not enough signature blocks available and so Fforde
notes continued to be produced concurrently with Page for well over a
year. For the £1 alone, 55 numerical overlaps have been logged. For
