BASIL GAGE CATTERNS
(1929-1934)
(The 19th Chief Cashier)
Basil Catterns was born on 20th June 1886 at
Oswaldtwistle in Lancashire, the son of the Rector, the Rev T.E.S.
Catterns. He was educated at Treat College Nottingham, and after
five years with the Manchester & Liverpool District Banking
Company (later the District Bank) at Accrington, he entered Bank
service on 13th I February 1908. During the First World War he served
as a Second Lieutenant in the Royal Field Artillery but was severely
wounded in the legs in 1917.
In 1920 he settled permanently in the Chief
Cashier’s office; he became Assistant Chief in 1923, Deputy Chief in
April 1925 and succeeded Cyril Mahon a Chief Cashier on 27th March
1929. He held this post until 17th April 1934, when he was appointed
an Executive Director. In March 1936 he succeeded Sir Ernest Harvey as
Deputy Governor and retired in 1945, serving two more years as a non
executive Director. He died on 5th February 1969.
