ANDREW JOHN BAILEY
(2004 -)
(The 30th Chief Cashier)
Andrew Bailey was born on 30th March 1959. He was
educated in Leicester at Wygeston Boys School, followed by the
University of Central England, Birmingham, and Queens’ College,
Cambridge where he obtained a BA and Ph.D. He was a research officer
at the London School of Economics before joining the international
division of the Bank on 3rd June 1985. After moving into Banking
Services, he became senior manager for Policy, Risk and Special
Operations, then was appointed private secretary to the Governor and
after that Head of the International Economic Analysis Division in
Monetary Analysis. On 1st January 2004, he returned to Banking
Services combining the role of Executive Director and Chief Cashier.
Mr. Bailey is married with two children and includes among his
recreations gardening and supporting West Bromwich Albion.
Release of notes bearing the signature of Andrew
Bailey was announced in a press notice on Monday 15th March 2004, but
there was no official information on the first prefixes and no
presentation packs were prepared. The traditional facility at the
Bank’s HQ in Threadneedle Street for collectors to obtain notes on the
first day of issue was withdrawn and the press notice merely stated
that: “All notes will be issued in the normal way through the
day-to-day distribution network operated by the Bank and main
commercial cash handlers”.
